Students of Comilla University have staged a protest over the killing of Ishayat Shahriar Apratim, demanding a proper investigation and justice.

Apratim, the only son of Bangla department teacher Nahida Begum, was found dead in a secluded woodland in Lalmai hill near the university on Saturday afternoon.

Students later brought out an impromptu protest procession on campus.

They urged the administration to improve law and order around the university.

The university authorities have meanwhile declared a day of mourning over Apratim’s death. All classes and examinations across departments have also been suspended on Sunday.

Proctor Prof Abdul Hakim said the university authorities condemned and protested the killing and expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

“Sunday has been declared a day of mourning. Notices will be issued to reschedule the classes and examinations suspended that day,” he said.

Body Handed Over, Janaza Monday

Police said Apratim’s body was handed over to his family after a postmortem at Cumilla Medical College Hospital on Saturday night.

Relatives said his Namaz-e-Janaza, or funeral prayer, is scheduled to be held at Comilla University at 10am on Monday.

Apratim, 13, left his home in Kotbari on Friday afternoon with his mother’s iPhone, saying he would take pictures with friends.

He did not return, prompting his father KM Firoz Shahriar to file a general diary with Cumilla Sadar South Police.

His body was recovered around 1pm Saturday from woodland at Sananda village in Bijoypur Union.

Police said there were marks of injury to his head. His mother’s iPhone was not found with the body.

Apratim was a seventh grader at the local Border Guard Public School.
