Police have arrested 179 people in connection with a procession in Dhaka’s Gulshan where participants chanted “Joy Bangla”.

The procession took place in the Gulshan-1 area around midday on Sept 11, involving several hundred people, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police said on Saturday.

Police moved to disperse the procession, after which two crude bombs were detonated, according to police.

Officers fired two rounds of rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.

Gulshan Police Sub-Inspector Md Mahbub Hossain filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act over the incident.

The case names 118 people and lists another 80 to 100 unidentified people as suspects.

Some of those arrested in the case were also taken into police custody for questioning, according to earlier updates.

A Dhaka court subsequently ordered 24 suspects to be held on 10-day remand.

Nine other suspects were later sent to jail after being arrested in connection with the case, while four more were sent to jail on Friday following their arrests from different parts of Dhaka.

Following the procession and the subsequent withdrawal of two senior Gulshan police officials, the DMP has warned all its police stations and divisions to remain alert over such incidents, according to Saturday’s statement.

Gulshan Division Deputy Commissioner M Tanvir Ahmed and Gulshan Police chief Md Daud Hossain were withdrawn within hours of each other following the procession, according to the report.
